For this article, we sat down with the founder of WRG Engineering P.C, Winston Rafael Garcia. Civil and Structural Engineer, Winston Rafael Garcia shares with us his journey in the construction and engineering industries. Mr. Garcia also discusses what he has and will accomplish with WRG Engineering P.C.
Mr. Winston, where are you from and what was your journey to become an engineer?
“I was born and raised, in the Dominican Republic. As a child, I always had a love for mathematics and drawing. My mother was extremely strict about my studies and made sure I made it to college or trade school. I wanted to be an architect as I went into college, and I was advised to switch to Civil Engineering, for more job opportunities in my country. I graduated high school at the age of 15 and graduated college at the age of 20, from the university, Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering.”
What made you want to become an engineer and pursue work within the construction and development industry?
Mr. Winston's journey into engineering and the construction and development industry was sparked by a childhood immersed in the world of construction.
He says “From assisting on job sites at just eight years old with Mr. Bernardo, Mr. Amason and Mr. Fellito, to growing up surrounded by architectural drawings, my passion for building and creating was evident early on. Initially I was drawn to architecture, I pursued this path until financial constraints redirected my focus. With guidance from a counselor and my father, I discovered the field of engineering as an alternative route to channel my creative and analytical skills.”
Graduating at a remarkably early age of 15, his father's encouragement and insight into the possibilities within engineering solidified his decision. Since then, Mr. Winston has dedicated himself to shaping the environment through innovative engineering solutions. His lifelong love for construction and development has fueled this dedication.
When was WRG ENGINEERING P.C founded and how was this company born?
“WRG ENGINEERING P.C was founded after my decision to embark on my engineering career, just a year into becoming a licensed engineer. For me, starting my own engineering firm was a lifelong dream, fueled by passion for the profession and a desire to be my own boss. Despite invitations to various endeavors, my heart always remained devoted to engineering. As an immigrant, I recognized that venturing out on my own was necessary to secure a job in my chosen field. Thus, WRG ENGINEERING P.C was born, driven by my dedication to engineering and my determination to carve out my own path in the industry.”
What is your main goal as a civil and structural engineer?
“As a civil and structural engineer, my primary objective revolves around my passion for tackling challenges and finding solutions. However, primarily, my overarching goal is to ensure the safety and well-being of both residents and workers. With a deep understanding of the complexities of infrastructure and construction, I strive to design and implement projects that prioritize public safety at every stage. Whether it is constructing a bridge, a high-rise building, or an intricate transportation network, my dedication to upholding the highest standards of safety underscores my every endeavor. For me, the satisfaction of knowing that my work contributes to the security and welfare of communities is the ultimate measure of success in my profession as a civil and structural engineer.”
